As a native of Indianapolis, I grew up with a keen

interest in art, photography and not suprisingly – auto racing.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree in
Commercial Art from the University of Indianapolis.
I moved to San Diego, California, where I was

exposed to west-coast living. I relocated to
Orlando, Florida, applying more art knowledge
and experience to the styles, pastel colors and
east-coast living. I designed and painted
Orlando-area homes, as well as being
commissioned to work on condos,
sales office and mural design at the
prestigious Reunion Resort development by Ginn.

I have recently moved my headquarters back to Indianapolis;
however, I continue to work specialty referral projects in other
areas of the country.

My artistic talent has taken me to the sophisticated side of society living and allowed me to be exposed to many different forms and styles of custom paint designs. Most importantly, it is the satisfaction of seeing my clients dreams and visions become reality.

Alumnus Shows His True Colors

When you think of traditional Independence Day activities, you might think of fireworks and family barbecues. But for Jeffery S. Guthery '03, the holiday consisted of spending about 100 hours painting a mural of the American flag, which spans one entire exterior wall of the Manor House Antique Mall on U.S. 31 South in Indianapolis near campus.

When store manager Suzanne Most mentioned to Jeff that the building's exterior needed painting, they thought "Why not do a mural?" Suzanne is sister-in-law to Sharon Most '63, head coach of the highly successful Martinsville (Ind.) High School golf team. She knew of Jeff's artistic talent through his mother, who is a dealer at the Antique Mall.

"This was my first outdoor mural," Jeff said. "I knew it was a big task, but I also knew that I could do it." Previously, he designed and hand-painted a bedroom mural for a Biltmore Homes model home in New Whiteland, Ind., that featured a jungle theme complete with zebra stripes.

Jeff's sense of patriotism has always been solid, but since he painted this mural, his eyes are now keen on seeing more public displays or original art featuring our nation's flag, which is great, he says. And the Antique Mall's clientele, who pass by the mural as they exit the building, is excited about this mural and enjoy seeing the flag so prominently displayed, says Suzanne Most.

Jeff, age 32, graduated 2003 with a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design and visual communication. "I started taking classes back in 1995, one class at a time, while working full time," he said, "I realized that if I was ever going to finish this degree, I needed to go full time for one year and not work full time, which is what I did."

He and his new bride, Cindy, recently relocated from Avon, Ind., to Orlando, Fla., where he will complete the second half of coursework at the Golf Academy of the South, a 16-month program teaching golf sports marketing and management. His goal is to apply his artistic talent to the art of golf course design. - Monica Woods

Met a young man this week who's career goal(s) are in areas pretty danged tough to achieve. They are commercial artist, or pro golf instructor or course designer/manager.

Sound disjointed?

Yes, but listening to Jeff Guthery talk, not so unlikely. The University of Indianapolis graduate has a degree in commercial art/visual communications. He also got halfway through the San Diego Golf Academy before running out of money. The Academy teaches both instructional methods and course management.

To teach, you have to be below and eight handicap (he's at five), and then, of course, find a spot at a course somewhere around the country.

And, to become a successful course designer, well, now you're in the bailiwick of the likes of Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Fazio.

But, I get ahead of myself.

We were called a few weeks ago by Suzanne Most, manager of Manor House Antique Mall at 5454 S. East St. (U.S. 31 S). She said some young guy was about to paint a giant U.S. flag on the rear wall of their building, and would we come do a story when completed.

On Monday, this scribbler visited, and shote the picture on page 1.

Jeff Guthery, the 32-year old "young guy" Suzanne referred to, was on the mall's front desk, and frankly, his personal story of hopes and dreams was more interesting than his flag mural. (The fact that I'm a wanna be golfer might have some bearing on my "interest level")

Jeff is a native of Speedway, and played golf on the Speedway High School team. At one time they were ranked number nine in the state.

He started playing the game as a 10-year old, and the addiction grew.

He heard of the San Diego institue, and following high schoo, hiked on out there to enroll. Well, he lasted eight of the 16 months, but failing to find a roomy to share the $900 per month rent, had to hang it up and head for home.

That led to the eventual four-year degree from U of I.

To finance that procedure, he painted houses. Still does, and plans to continue after he and his wife of six months move to Orlando this fall.

In Orlando is another branch of the San Diego academy, where Jeff plans to "finish the course", (no pun intended), receive an associate's degree and then go after that golf job.

His rationale: "I may end up in the golf course design business, coupling that degree with my art degree and experience house painting." The house painting includes exteriors and also interior "techniques" such as suedes and antiqued leathers.

The rationale sounds like a winner to me, and with the tenacity he's exhibited so far, not the least bit unrealistic.

Back to the mural: it measures 14' x 96' consumed all or part of seven gallons of paint; and was completed in an astonishingly short period of about a week-and-a-half!

Sadly, it isn't visible from the road. To admire it you must drive around the building as it's on the western-facing wall.

A dream of mall manager Suzanne Most, she approached Jeff on the project as he filled in part time up front. Jeff's mother, Marcia Wells, also happens to occupy booth #576 at the facility.

Jeff sketched out some options then took an informal poll among shoppers and mall tenants.

The final design was then diagrammed on the outside wall and the rest is history.

Why the mural?

"In my mind," Jeff states, "it's part patriotic, and also the fact the company headquarters are in Texas, which has a star in their state flag."

The artwork has now been seen by other stores in the chain via the Internet, and many favorable comments have come Jeff's way. (Log on to www.antiquelandusa.com. It's a really neat site.)

Bottom line: don't be surprised if some day, while watching a PGA Tour event, you hear a commentator say, "This course was designed by newcomer Jeff Guthery...and oh, by the way, dig that mural of Tiger just off the 18th green. He did that too."
